The Opening scene is extremely important and sets the mood and tone for not only the film opening but the entire movie itself. Today I will be sharing my findings after watching a youtube video on the different ways to start a film.
One strategy is starting with a bang, but although this strategy may be great for blockbuster films I do not have the resources to create a giant bang such as a man hanging off a plane. Simply this will just not work for me, most likely. This is a great way to introduce the villain of the film as well and give them a memorable opening. Also instead of introducing the villain you can introduce the hero and his background, which may also portray what the film will be based on.
I noted some important things which is that the opening should engage the audience into the film, so maybe I could start with a very colorful scene to gain their attention, or have a loud sting or voice. Also I saw the use of a voiceover sometimes being effective when establishing a relationship. For example, it can explain the background of the relationships or the certain aspects of a character. The most important thing to do if I choose to establish a relationship is to show what each character cares about.
The opening can introduce the plot catalyst or what the movie is centered around. For example, in "Uncut Gems" the movie centers around the effects of a certain gem and introduces the effects early by showing a severely injured man and then the gem and its insides. This is something I may have the capability of using as it is not required to have a lot of resources to pull this off. This also seems like a very interesting opening and definitely something I will consider using for the future.
These all will help when deciding how to structure my film opening and I most definitely will consider the last aspect of showing the plot catalyst and its effects on the rest of the movie.
